Linking to web pages and other resources

Web pages can be linked to each other simply and easily to an in-house navigation system.

Handles descriptive information about objects and resources (metadata)

All pages which are created can have meta data associated with them through the use of the embedded meta data table embedded in each page which is created.

Searching simultaneously across different databases presenting an integrated result (federated search)

The KnowledgNET contains an integrated searching tool which allows users to selectively search all materials contained within the KnowledgeNET as well as being able to search the library of 7000 web sites, the digital learning objects from the Learning Federation, bookmarked sites, the most used sites . . . .

Processes

(discourse, collaboration, reflection…)

• Users are empowered to use a wide range of tools for expression through discourse, for reflection, and to publish in the web environment

Synchronous conversation tools readily available

Synchronous conversation tools are readily available in the form of online chat.

Forums for asynchronous conversations are easily created? Can they be accessed in the context of the learning activity?

Asynchronous tools include discussion forums which are embedded automatically in all classes, subjects and interest areas which are created by the user.

Publishing tools (e.g. Blog tools)

In trial format the moment are blogging tools which will be used in the development of the Web-folios. The web-folios also contained reflective tools, strategic planning and self-assessment environments.

Reflective tools (e.g. e-portfolio)

What other collaborative tools are available?

Forums

Ability to deploy tools on-the-fly

Yes

Organisation

• Management of learning

Promotes innovative teaching practice or supports existing best practice, How?

The KnowledgeNET provides for innovative teaching practices by allowing teachers to integrate and sequence resources which can be cut and pasted from already existing web sites (with © permission), word, Excel and PowerPoint presentations, and any other digital resources. Teachers are encouraged to develop open, fertile, high order questioning strategies in order to carry out inquiry learning based activities in order that learners can develop conceptual understanding. This is one of the focal points of the training which is provided. Content and activities can be structured sequentially, linked to additional pages anywhere within the KnowledgeNET or to any additional web resources. Content can be either structure hierarchically or sequentially

• Management of learners

Content and activities can be structured sequentially

• Learners self-organisation

Content and activities can be structured hierarchically

Administration

Administration

• Support services for different user groups - learners, teachers, and administrators

Support through email, telephone, frequently asked questions, and online help manuals

KnowledgeNET provides a helpdesk via telephone and e-mail (9am-5pm) as well as providing online help throughout the KnowledgeNET environment. At present we are developing an interactive CD and this will be available to all KnowledgeNET schools by Feb 2007

• User accounts created and groups managed

Self-creation of account on a web form and re-set of passwords via email

Accounts can be created by administrators on-the-fly and passwords set and reset on request to the administrator, class/subject/group teacher. Data can be imported from some SMS systems now and this capability will be available to all SMS's by late 2007 under an MoE trial that Dataview are presently conducting.

Groups lists can be easily created and members joined, removed, and added to other groups individually or on block

Groups and individuals can have different permissions attributed to them

There are four distinct profiles; parents, students, teachers and administrators and these come with standard permissions for ease of set and use. These permissions can be changed but only by administrators.

• Resource implications for chosen solution

Maintenance contract costs vs in-house maintenance costs

Dataview, as the owner of KnowledgeNET hosts the KnowledgeNET in a secure, independent server environment and carries out all maintenance and development. The school does not host the KnowledgeNET on their own campus but rather users access the KnowledgeNET via the interne from anywhere anytimet. This substantively reduces internal maintenance and management costs.

Integration with existing software, hardware, and practices

As the system only uses freely available web browsers there is no additional costs other than access to the internet.

Licensing – one off, annual, per user

Dataview charges a one-off set up cost dependent on school roll and an ongoing maintenance fee which includes appropriate hard drive space and traffic as well as access to the helpdesk and all the updates to the KnowledgeNET as they are created.

Training and support for staff

Full training and support is offered to schools who use the KnowledgeNET and this is provided to the school by on-site trainers along with a comprehensive implementation plan, training manual, online help and support of the help desk

Server maintenance and management

The servers are fully maintained and managed by Dataview. Dataview already manages servers on behalf of hundreds of commercial clients to the highest security and back-up specifications.

• Users experience of the platform is intuitive and without significant barriers

Users have individual identity and presence on the platform and a strong sense of the identity of others

Each user has an individual identity and can view each of the classes, subjects and interest groups they are part of as well as any forums, discussion groups they may have access to along with all calendars and news groups that they are a member of.

Users have a strong sense of the audience for their work when private, published in small groups, or on the www

Each user is well aware of his/her audience when they publish their works in particular locations and who does and does not have access to their work.

Navigation around the platform is simple and intuitive

The “Navigator” is a specially designed tool to allow students to move to any other page they have access to (defined by the permissions). Navigation can also be achieved to the drop-down Java menus at the top every page.

Accessibility for special educational needs

At present there is no special access ability provision made the students were special education needs.

Accessible via school Intranets and also on the www for use from outside the school

The KnowledgeNET is a completely Web based solution and as such is accessible from any Internet enabled computer anywhere, any time with links to any other web based school resource or site.

Platform offers different language options and supports macrons

The KnowledgeNET is available in English, however does have the ability to change menu item and navigation names to other languages by the site administrator. Macrons are presently being researched for implementation.

Notification of new content and contributions

The KnowledgeNET system has an email notification system for when new content is added

Searching and book-marking of relevant items found

A comprehensive bookmarking system is in place and bookmarks are part of the users individual profile so they appear no matter which internet enabled computer they work from.

Technical

• Platform hosted locally or hosted by a third party provider

Server setup

The dedicated multiple server set up is based on Linux using open source MySQL and php scripting. Servers have a full backup

Hosted service contract

There is a service contract that binds Dataview into being responsible for backing up and managing the servers which the schools KnowledgeNET's are hosted on.

Backup and retrieval regime

Dataview backs up all data on each school's KnowledgeNET on a daily basis. Retrieval and restore of data is done on pro-rata cost basis.

Open Source or proprietary solution

The KnowledgeNET is a proprietary solution based on open source software elements.

• Specifications that determine how the platform can be used and adapted

Open standards

The server set up is based on Linux using open source MySQL and php scripting.

Ability to customise

The administrators within each KnowledgeNET environment have full capability to customise drop down menus, colors, logos, images

Continual development plan

The KnowledgeNET is in continuous improvement and the KnowledgeNET user group, made up of constituent schools has 100 hours of development time available to them each term to tell Dataview what improvements they wish to see and Dataview is obligated to make these improvements. Dataview is also working with the MoE on arrange of other improvements surrounding security, interoperability and

Upgrades plan

A systematic approach to upgrades is carried out with beta development, trial schools and then finally changes are rolled out to all schools with them being advised of all changes being made prior to the rollover.

Scalability

We presently have approximately 130 schools/early childhood centres and commercial interests using the KnowledgeNET and we have a number of servers managing this process. Scalability is not a problem as we host and maintain all KnowledgeNETs

Interoperability

The KnowledgeNET is in the final throes of being made interoperable with Musac and to have these interoperable standards available to all SMS's in 2007. The KnowledgeNET is also interoperable with the Digital Learning Objects from the Learning Federation and these are available from the KnowledgeNET Research zone. Being a web based system it can be made interoperable with any other web based system such as e-AsTTle (when it becomes available).

Content can be transferred to another system

Content can be cut and pasted to ay other system including MS Office and vice-versa.

Server administration

The management of the servers is carried out by Dataview and the core of our business is data management and service. This applies to security and firewall protection which is carried out on behalf of all clients.
